Where Is My Main Water Shut-Off Valve?
Knowing the location of your main water shut-off valve is one of the most important things every homeowner should know. In a plumbing emergency like a burst pipe or major leak, shutting off the water supply quickly can prevent thousands of dollars in water damage. Yet many homeowners have never located their valve or tested it.
In most Los Angeles area homes, the main water shut-off valve is located in one of several common places. Check along the perimeter of your home, typically near the front where the water line enters from the street. In homes with basements, the valve is often found on the basement wall closest to the street. For homes built on a slab foundation, look in the garage, near the water heater, or in a utility closet.
There are two types of shut-off valves you may encounter. A gate valve has a round handle that you turn clockwise to close. A ball valve has a lever handle that you turn 90 degrees to shut off. Ball valves are more reliable and easier to operate, especially in an emergency.
In addition to the main valve inside your home, there is typically a shut-off valve near the street, often located in a covered box in the ground near the curb. This valve is usually operated by the water utility company, but homeowners can use it in an emergency with a water meter key.
We recommend testing your shut-off valve at least once a year. Valves that sit unused for years can seize up or develop leaks. Turn it fully closed and then fully open again to keep it functional. If your valve is difficult to turn or leaks when operated, it should be replaced by a licensed plumber.
